There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is His Prophet

Tonight I stepped out in the cold night air, under an indigo sky peppered with sparkling stars and I took the shahada.

I had been planning to become a Muslim on some special day, in some really noteworthy way, but it began to feel a bit disingenuous – as though I was trying to fool Allah. I had been slowly coming to realize that I already believed what the shahada said, so that by putting off saying it officially I was actually just keeping myself from the duties of a Muslim. I realized that I was already Muslim in all but name.

After I came back inside after saying the shahada, I took a shower as I had read was recommended. Then my daughter requested that I sit down with her on the couch and spend time with her. So I did. And life continues as before.

Except I am now a Muslim. I feel that it is right and natural. I shall need to begin to pray and learn in earnest. And I shall also say it in front of the ummah, at a local masjid, as soon as I am able so that there will be witnesses.

Alhamdulillah!

  5. Alhamdulillah,

It really brought tears to my eyes.

I include you in my Du’a that God almighty keep you with and Imaan and guide you with patience in your journey to get closer to HIM going forward.

    Wassalam

  6. Allahu akbar!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband sends his congratulations also – may Allah grant you mercy and wisdom in this life and jannah for you and your family in the hereafter. You have many brothers and sisters making do3a2 for you here in Egypt.

    • Thank you so much for reading my blog and commenting and also for sharing your own extraordinary journey via your wonderful blog. Please thank your husband for me. All prayers are welcome, as I know that my journey is now just beginning. Salaam.

  7. Oh wow! I had no idea!

Congratulations, but Allah always warns that the believers will be tested as I am sure you know. I pray that your tests shall be easy, since you were able to recognise the truth on your own, unlike many of us.

    • Thank you for your prayers. I am so very blessed to have found the Straight Path, but it has unfortunately taken me many years of torment and searching. May Allah bless us all with His peace and may He bring many, many more into Islam where they can know Him most fully. Salaam.

  8. Alhamdulillah indeed!

Best news I’ve heard in ages, and trust me I could use some good news right now.

I wish we who have been reading your blog could get together in some way to celebrate and rejoice but I guess that’s not possible because we are scattered all over the planet. I’m really happy in any case and may have my own personal celebration tonight!

I want to thank you for keeping this blog and giving us a fascinating insight into your ideas and journey to Islam. We often get to hear or read about people’s conversion stories but we have been privileged to have followed you in ‘real time’ thanks to your wonderful posts. Strange as it sounds, in a way it’s like we vicariously ‘experienced’ that journey with you. Not many people would have been as open as that, especially about a religion as ‘divisive’ as Islam, so again, many thanks for allowing us to be there with you.

I hope you will maintain your blog or at least keep writing, since I think you have some great ideas/writing irrespective of your religious status. Also, just as following your journey to Islam was most fascinating, seeing your ‘new life’ as a Muslim would also be a privilege.

I sincerely hope for all the best for you and your family from Allah.

    • Thanks very much for your thoughts, Rehan, and thank you for reading and commenting on my blog. The comments of kind, thoughtful Muslims such as yourself have been very much appreciated as I wrestled with these issues.
I intend to maintain this blog, but just to shift its focus to that of a new Muslim. I still have so very much to learn, and if this blog can help others as I do so, it will all be good. Thank you again.

  10. Peace and Blessings on You and Welcome to the Faith. May God Always Bless You and Keep You Firm on His Path.

  11. Assalamu Alaikum Brother Ashmath :)

I am too glad that you said the shahada.
In fact I was waiting for it. :)
I always get very happy whenever anyone reverts to Islam but I feel much more happier when anyone reverts after a deep study of all the faiths like you did. Alhamdulillah! may Allah help us all to achieve His pleasure and grant us Jannah, ameen.

And I suggest that you keep this blog as it is without changing the name as it can be a source of guidance for those who has taken a path like you had taken to reach the truth.
of course you can blog as a new Muslim which we all shall be glad to read :)

    Salam :)
